In an interview with Attitude Magazine, on which Michael Sam is the May cover model, the ex-NFL football player laid to rest some of the exaggerated ideas concerning homophobia in the black community, stating racism in the gay community for him, has been a much bigger problem.
Despite being the target of white-led gay activist efforts, black people, even those heavily entrenched in the church culture and biblical doctrine, tend to live by the philosophy that you can love a person even if you disagree with their behavior.
Sam said black people, including his family have been accepting of his him. He said, acceptance in the white gay community has been much harder to come by, calling the racism in the gay community “terrible”.
“A lot of people have [gay] friends, cousins, brothers, sisters. … They have at least one openly gay person, at least it’s more accepting, that’s my experience. People tell me they have family members who are gay, and it doesn’t freak them out and no black person ever freaked out at me, ‘Oh, you’re gay.’ None.”
